FLATFORMS IN PAST AND PRESENT TRENDS

2023-09-20618

Within the fashion industry in general, there is a recurring trend of revitalizing styles that were popular in the past, experiencing a resurgence in contemporary fashion. Although there is no specific term to describe this process, it is a strategy that we have witnessed over the course of several seasons, and the footwear sector is no exception to this dynamic. After such context, I would like to make special mention of Flatforms.

Flatforms, a type of flat platform footwear, have a rich and diverse history over the centuries, to illustrate.

In the contemporary era, flatforms gained popularity in the 1930s to 1950s, especially in the United States and Europe.

"The Rainbow" platform sandal designed by Salvatore Ferragamo in the 1930s helped propel the trend. In the 1950s, British Teddy boys adopted creepers as part of their style, which were shoes with wide, thick soles.

By 1970 their popular use was especially in nightclubs, with flamboyant designs that included bright colors, lights, polka dots and a variety of materials. In the 1990s, the Spice Girls contributed to the popularity of flatforms, incorporating them into their iconic style.

Today, in 2023, flatforms have experienced a resurgence, especially with the Y2K trend reminiscent of the style of the late 1990s and early 2000s. They are characterized by bold colors, creative designs, and footwear with no restrictions in terms of design.

They have diversified into a variety of models, including sandals, espadrilles, oxford shoes, sneakers, loafers, chunky tennis shoes, flats, boots and booties, among others.

Domestic brands are presenting a wide range of innovative designs with vibrant colors and high quality materials, making them a key trend in the footwear industry today.
