2023-10-192198

In order to provide a deeper understanding of footwear consumption in Mexico, the Center for Innovation and Competitiveness has conducted this study that presents a thorough analysis of spending by Mexicans, with a particular focus on investments related to footwear and its maintenance. This report breaks down the following results:

  • ·         Quarterly spending by Mexican households in 2022 reached 1.501 billion pesos, with an average of 39,988 pesos per household per quarter (approximately 13,329 pesos per month). Of this spending, 1,524 pesos on average went to clothing and footwear, broken down into 935 pesos for clothing and 589 pesos for footwear and its repair.
  • ·         Total spending on footwear and its repair represented 1.47% of household spending, with 22.108 billion pesos spent on this item.
  • ·         The average expenditure on footwear and its repair per household was 589 pesos overall and 1,117 pesos in households that purchased footwear.
  • ·         In the state of Guanajuato, average quarterly spending per household on clothing and footwear was 1,244 pesos, slightly below the national average.
  • ·         The number of households purchasing footwear increased by 40.8% from 2020 to 2022, and total spending increased by 93.6% in nominal terms over the same period.
  • ·         These data reflect the behavior of spending on clothing and footwear in Mexican households, showing trends of increase and variation as a function of income level and geographic location, as in the case of Guanajuato.

Taken together, these findings provide a clearer picture of how Mexican households spend on footwear and how this may be influenced by economic and geographic factors. These findings are essential to better understand consumer behavior and may be useful for decision making at both the government and private sector levels.
